Using the 5 Universal Healing Principles Of Postpartum

1. EXTENDED REST

Physical Healing

Using an herbal and holistic approach, I will help you recover and recuperate from birth and navigate the many changes happening within your body, mind and spirit. From a custom herbal plan, home-made herbal baths, teas and sitz, moxibustion sessions, preparing nourishing meals, and so much more, I am there to ensure you are healing and resting!

Sleep

Whether it mean meditating, listening to calming music or watching your favorite movie, I will be there to ensure you are laying and resting. Need a nap? Of course you do! You can rest with ease knowing I am there to care for baby while you sleep. We will also cover sleep cycles, how much baby should sleep and good sleep hygiene for the whole family.

Practical Support

You need not lift a finger during your first forty days. Your only job is to rest, heal and bond with your baby. I can help you with laundry, dishes, preparing meals and tidying up.

2. NOURISHING FOOD

“Let food be thy medicine.” It’s a millennia old statement credited to Hippocrates, emphasizing the role of nutrition in healing the body and preventing illness. Healing and restoring the new mother with nourishing, warming, easy-to-digest foods is the cornerstone of postpartum care.  Proper nutrition is key to coping with stressors and periods of poor sleep during motherhood, preventing a spiral of fatigue, high cortisol (stress hormone) and subsequent physical imbalances, which can lead to a raft of long-term issues.

This is why you’ll find seasonal, organic produce, warming spices and nutrient-dense whole-foods on my postpartum menu (free of charge), perfect for restoring life-force energy and replenishing nutrients lost through pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding. I will also prepare meals for you!

3. LOVING TOUCH

Moxibustion

Across many cultures this type of bodywork is a postpartum prescription to assist in stimulating blood flow which in turn: cleans, renews, moves fluids (it may also help with milk supply), moves hormones, stimulates the immune system, and helps tone muscles and tissues. A moxa is a herbal stick, held above the abdomen and sacrum while gently steaming – much like a sage smudge. This ritual warms the body, tones the uterus, aids circulation, relaxes tender tendons and ligaments and promotes tissue healing. It has also been known to increase milk supply and help with PPD, insomnia and fatigue. Lay down and enjoy the warmth along with soothing music, candles, crystals and essential oils. Each session takes about 20 minutes.

Emotional Support

The first few weeks after birth are magical, transformative and deeply emotional. I will provide herbal support, essential oils and meditations that will boost your mood and help balance out those postpartum emotions. I am your safe space to be held, to listen objectively and empathetically, and process your labor and birth in healthy way. Coming home means sleepless nights, the challenge of establishing a feeding schedule, fears, and uncertainties. About 80% of new mothers experience “baby blues”, which can lead to sadness, bouts of crying, irritability and anxiety for about two weeks. I will be there to hear you, hold you and hug you as we process your birth and navigate through all the emotional ups and downs.

4. THE VILLAGE

Breastfeeding Support

I will assist with a feeding schedule, identifying hunger cues, signs of fullness, how to know if baby is getting enough milk, proper position and latch (breast and bottle) and provide cures for common breast ailments, such as nipple and breast soreness and engorgement.

Newborn Care

My job is to wait on your hand and foot to ensure that you are resting and bonding with your baby. For the times when you need to rest away from baby, I am here with full spectrum newborn care- with a decade of experience in my back pocket.

Educate and Empower

As a mother, you already hold all of the innate wisdom and intuition you need to care for your baby, and I am here to guide you toward this wisdom and help you along the way so that you leave your first forty days feeling empowered and confident. We will learn to bathe, care for the umbilical area, feed, soothe, diaper, read language and hunger cues, cover safety practices and so much more.

Referral and Resource Lists

The most important tool of a doula is their resources. I will provide a specialized list of postpartum resources- from chiropractors, pelvic floor therapists, acupuncturists, Craniosacral therapists, support communities (online and in person), books, and so much more.

5. CONTACT WITH NATURE

It will be a few weeks before we will go on gentle walks together. Until then, there are many ways we can incorporate nature into your life. I would love to bring crystals and incense into your sacred space, pour you a cup of home-made herbal tea and sit outside with you in the sunshine, run you an herbal bath or bring fresh flowers to your bedside. Perhaps put your rocking chair by a sunny window while you feed or partake in “earthing”, a practice of simply placing your bare feet onto the earth. Earthing research suggests reduced pain, stress, and inflammation and an improvement of overall mental well-being. This technique restores the connection between the body and the electrical currents of the earth.
